Transfusion Medicine

About Us

Transfusion medicine is the study of blood cell antigens and antibodies associated with blood transfusions and the use of blood and blood products as treatment. Transfusion services include testing of patient samples, inventorying and selection of products, compatibility testing of products suitability for patients and managing patients with adverse effects of transfusion.

Blood transfusions are an essential part of patient care. Transfusion is the transfer of blood, its components, or products from one person (donor) into another person's bloodstream (recipient). Every year in BC, thousands of patients receive hundreds of thousands of units of blood products.

It builds upon the Provincial Blood Coordinating Office (PBCO) Transfusion Medicine Advisory Group (TMAG) that is already extensively involved with establishing best practices for Transfusion Medicine and utilization. Members are on both the Transfusion Medicine Working Group and the Transfusion Medicine Advisory Group.
